Nandamuri Balakrishna’s moustache is synonymous with his machismo. Most of his action films even have him spewing powerful dialogues that sing praises of his famed facial hair, which made him every bit the hero he is. And now, it’s been shaved off.

On Wednesday, when the actor was spotted at director Dasari Narayana Rao’s birthday bash, without his moustache, onlookers were caught by surprise. The actor however, was quick to explain though that this look was for his upcoming film,“Sri Rama Rajyam” in which he is all set to play the role of Lord Sri Rama.
Veteran actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao is playing the role of sage Valmiki, hero Srikanth will be seen as Lakshmana and Nayanatara as Sita, in this epic film directed by Bapu. “He wanted to look authentic. Most of Lord Sri Rama’s films have actors without a moustache. He didn’t hesitate to shave it off since the role demanded it,” says a source from the film unit.

In an industry where the moustache is symbol of ‘manliness,’ heroes are never seen without them. Even though Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh played many mythological roles, rarely
do they shave off their moustaches. The last time Chiranjeevi dared to shave was for the movie,“Chantabbai,” back in the 1980s. Ditto with Nagarjuna who shaved only once for “Boss” and quickly grew it back. Now, we are yet to see how Balakrishna’s fans will react to his new clean shaven look.
